The Irish team reeled off six successive victories, including a 19-10 win over Georgia in the final, to clinch the men’s title at the Vila Real de Santo Antonio Stadium and Sports Complex.

Georgia stunned Spain and France on their way to the gold-medal contest, but they came up short against Ireland.

They capitalised on Andrew Smith’s early sin-binning to take the early lead as Giorgi Jobava crossed after Beka Gelkhvidze launched an attack.

Ireland trailed 5-0 at the break but responded with a try from Zac Ward, which Billy Dardis converted.

Ward struck again when he sniped around the side of a ruck for his fifth try of the tournament, with Dardis adding the extras.

Leading 14-5, 20-year-old speedster Dylan O’Grady swept over the try-line to all-but secure victory.

Georgia scored late on courtesy of an unconverted try from Giorgi Kurtanidze but it was too little, too late as Ireland captured the title.

"All the teams are playing well and it’s a good building block," said Irish player Niall Comerford.

"We’ll be back together in Kraków in about two weeks’ time for Olympic qualification and that’s what everyone is really after.

"All credit to Georgia, they were excellent there today after coming third in their group, winning the quarter, winning the semi.

"Everyone’s building towards Kraków now."

France bounced back from their semi-final defeat to Georgia to win bronze thanks to a 21-14 triumph against Britain.

There was delight for France in the women’s tournament in the Algarve as they defeated Britain 19-7 in the final to win gold.

The bronze-medal match was also one-sided with Ireland overpowering Poland 20-7.
