The Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF) was praised for its work at a Board meeting of the Olympic Refuge Foundation (ORF).

World Taekwondo President and THF chairman Chungwon Choue attended the meeting in Paris where he presented on the THF's work with the Terrains d'Avenir project, which uses sport to help refugees and displaced people assimilate into French society.

A programme as part of this scheme has been set-up by the ORF in Paris, the host of next year's Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Both International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, also the chairman of the ORF, and United Nations High Commissioner Filippo Grandi, offered praise for Choue as they visited a local scheme.

"As we heard in the Board meeting, the number of refugees and displaced persons is on course to increase for the eighth consecutive year and it is expected to bring the total number to more than 120 million people," Choue said.

"We as leaders in our respective fields must do our best to reverse this course.

"With peace in mind and taekwondo at heart, World Taekwondo and the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation will do our utmost to give hopes and dreams to the refugees and displaced persons around the world but we need to have partners to be successful."

Taekwondo Paralympian Zakia Khodadadi, who competed at Tokyo 2020 after fleeing Taliban rule in Afghanistan, is part of Terrains d'Avenir.

Fellow member Marzieh Hamidi, another refugee from Afghanistan, has been awarded an IOC scholarship for Paris 2024 so could be selected for the Refugee Olympic Team.

Twelve other taekwondo athletes have a scholarship so are also targeting Paris 2024.

The THF works to teach taekwondo to refugees and displaced people around the world.

It has its flagship academy at the Azraq Refugee Camp in Jordan.
