Double Olympic champion Nicolás Massú has described the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games tennis venue as one of the best in South America, although it is yet to be fully built.

Construction of a new tennis centre is closing in on completion while renovations are being made to the central court of the National Stadium Park.

"The development of this infrastructure represents for us and for the community a beautiful opportunity to develop tennis in the country," said Chilean Massú, who won both singles and doubles gold at Athens 2004, is a former Davis Cup captain, and also a Santiago 2023 ambassador.

"It is the recovery of a historic square, something we expected a long time ago, and with constructions of the highest level.

"One of the best stadiums in South America."

For Santiago 2023, five competition venues are set to be used in the tennis tournaments.

The central court boasts a capacity of 3,352 while a 1,270-seater grandstand and the preliminary courts which hold around 300 people on average are also being built.

"This allows us to modernise the venue, not only from the technical aspect, but also from the comfort, since the dressing rooms, bathrooms, food points and accesses will be renovated, which will be universal," director of the National Sports Institute Israel Castro said of the Games.

"It is a venue that will put us at the forefront in relation to the tennis centres that exist in South America.

"They open the door for us to be able to organise important events in the future."

Tennis is scheduled to take place from October 23 to 29, with medals to be won in men's and women's singles and doubles competitions as well as mixed doubles.

Later, at the Parapan American Games, the venue will host wheelchair tennis from November 19 to 25.
