Georgian Sandro Bazadze and Alexandra Louis-Marie of France ended the second day of the European Fencing Championships victorious as they claimed the gold medals in Plovdiv.

European champion Bazadze prevailed in the men's sabre competition at the Kolodruma.

He confirmed his first-place finish in the 50-man tournament with a convincing 15-11 triumph against Hungarian Andras Szatmari.

It followed a dominant display in the semi-final that saw the 29-year-old blitz Turkey's Enver Yildirim by a 15-7 scoreline.

Yildirim took bronze as a result alongside Frenchman Sebastien Patrice who narrowly missed out on the final after losing 15-14 to Szatmari.

Another French medal came in the women's épée as Louis-Marie took the glory.

It was the first time that the 27-year-old had competed in the continental event, but it was not obvious from the way she surged through each stage.

She cruised past Italy's 2018 world champion Mara Navarria in the last bout to seal her maiden title.

World number 18 Louis-Marie rushed into a 6-2 lead before coasting to a 15-8 victory.

Louis-Marie's win makes her the first French gold medallist in the discipline since Coraline Vitalis in 2018.

She got the better of compatriot Auriane Mallo-Breton in the semi-final 15-13 to subject her to a bronze medal.

Nelli Differt joined her on the third step of the podium after her last four defeat to Navarria.

Competition is set to conclude tomorrow in Plovdiv with the men's foil and women's sabre tournaments scheduled.
