The country topped the medals table for the first time this century with four golds, one silver, and four bronzes.

Kano secured his first major individual title after prevailing in the men's épée final at the Taihu International Expo Center in the Chinese city. 

The 25-year-old beat home favourite Yu Lefan 15-10 after cruising past South Korean Kim Jae-won in the semi-final 15-7.

Akira Komata narrowly missed out on the final after falling 12-11 to Yu in the final four and had to join Kim on the third step of the podium.

Kano then experienced yet another team épée triumph on the international stage following his role in Japan's gold-medal winning squad from Tokyo 2020.

He was the only member of the Olympic team to compete in Wuxi, as he lined up with Akira Komata, Ryu Matsumoto, and Masaru Yamada.

The quartet swept Kazakhstan aside 45-25 for gold while Hong Kong and South Korea settled for bronze after their semi-final defeats.

There was another team victory in store for Japan, this time in the men's foil, as Kazuki Iimura, Kyosuke Matsuyama, Takahiro Shikine, and Kenta Suzumura amassed 45 points to South Korea's 38.

China and Hong Kong then made up the podium in third place.

Japan's final gold medal came courtesy of Sera Azuma, Komaki Kikuchi, Karin Miyawaki, and Yuka Ueno.

They downed China in the women's team foil decider 45-27 after Singapore and Hong Kong secured bronze medals.

The Japanese triumph was the first time that South Korea had not finished top in 12 editions dating back to 2008.
