Mexico’s Miguel de Lara and Mikel Schreuders of Aruba produced a dead heat for gold in one of the swimming highlights at the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador.

They touched simultaneously in the men's 50 metres breaststroke final in a time of  27.51sec for a new Games record eclipsing  Edgar Crespo of Panama's mark from the 2018 edition by five hundredths of a second.

Julio Horrego of Honduras came home in 27.86 to collect the bronze.

In the 4x100 metres mixed relay the Mexican quartet of Andres Dupont, Jorge Iga, Athena Meneses y Tayde Revilak also set a new Games record as they won gold in 3:31.1

In artistic swimming Mexico claimed their fourth gold of the Games.

Itzamary Gonzales and Diego Villalobos took the title in the mixed duet free routine.

Colombia’s Jennifer Cerquera and Gustavo Adolfo Sanchez Acero, gold medallists earlier in the technical routine, took silver.

Nicolle Torrens and Javier Ruisanchez Torres of Puerto Rico claimed bronze.

It is the first time that mixed events in artistic swimming have been included at the Games.

In women’s beach volleyball, there was a first gold for Puerto Rico’s Maria Gonzalez and Allanis Nava who defeated Bethania Almanzar and Julibeth Payano of the Dominican Republic 19-21, 21-11, 15-12.

"It’s an honour for us to take so much happiness to Puerto Rico and even more with a gold medal," Navas said.

"For me, it’s just the beginning of our plans, we have the idea to work hard every single day.

Bronze went to Mexico’s Abril Flores and Atenas Guttierez,

In the men’s competition, Mexico's Juan Virgen and Miguel Sarabia beat Nicaragua’s Jefferson Cascante and Ruben Mora in 21-10  21-19.

Bronze went to Noslen Diaz and Jorge Alayo of Cuba.

It was double gold for Colombia in seven’s rugby.

They defeated Mexico 15-7 to take gold in women’s sevens.

In the men’s event, Colombia beat Jamaica 28-7 for the title.

Meanwhile, Cuba’s double Pan American gold medal-winning pistol shooter Laina Perez is set to be nominated for a Coubertin medal for fair play.

She finished fourth in the air pistol as Mexico completed a clean sweep of medals which is not permitted by the regulations.

However, when Alejandra Cervantes of Mexico attempted to give the bronze medal to Perez she refused to accept it.

"It is unfair that someone who wins the bronze cannot take it just because she is from the same country as the others, I think it is absurd," said Perez who had won two gold medals at the Games in 2018.

“The medal is not, not mine, the medal is hers."
