The Olympic qualification procedure for the sport has been devised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), after it stripped the International Boxing Association (IBA) of any involvement for the second Games running because of concerns related to judging and refereeing, financial stability and governance.

This has ultimately led to the IBA becoming the first International Federation ever to be expelled from the Olympic Movement.

Until last month, the IBA had raised objections to Kraków-Małopolska 2023 being used as an Olympic qualifier, partly because Russian and Belarusian athletes are not competing due to the war in Ukraine.

Judges and referees had been threatened with sanctions for participation at any IOC-run event, but the IBA backed down last month and said it would allow National Federations to "freely participate" as a "goodwill gesture".

Most of the events at the Nowy Targ Arena offer four quota places for athlete to secure for their National Olympic Committees, meaning victories in the quarter-finals would be enough, although the men's under-51kg, under-92kg and over-92kg and the women's under-72kg offer only two.

Ireland's Harrington was among the first athletes to secure a quota place in the women's under-60 kilograms, recording a 4-1 split decision victory against Sweden's Agnes Alexiusson.

"I’m on cloud nine right now," Harrington said afterwards.

"I know that my face doesn’t say I’m overjoyed. 

"It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions; to come back after my hand being raised it’s just been incredible. 

"To go home now and to celebrate with my small circle; with my family, with [wife] Mandy, I just can’t wait."

Gizem Özer for Turkey and Natalia Shadrina for Serbia earned qualifying places, and Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallist Estelle Mossely who has won 11 professional fights did so for France 4-1 against Kosovo's Donjeta Sadiku.

Turkey's under-69kg Olympic gold medallist Sürmeneli is into the women's under-66kg quarter-final and her country has a place at Paris 2024 after she won unanimously against Aneta Rygielska of Poland.

Britain's under-70kg Commonwealth Games champion Rosie Eccles narrowly took the women's under-66kg quarter-final 3-2 against Ireland's Amy Broadhurst, also a gold medallist in Birmingham last year at under-60kg.

The other under-66kg quota places went to Belgium through Oshin Derieuw and Hungary through Luca Anna Hámori.

Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Buse Naz Çakıroğlu of Turkey won unanimously against Natalia Rok of Poland in the women's under-50kg for a quota place, also secured by Spain's Laura Fuertes, Wassila Lkhadiri of France and Giordana Sorrentino of Italy.

At women's under-54kg, former world champion Hatice Akbaş triumphed for Turkey against Sirine Charaabi of Italy, and European Games gold medallist Stanimira Petrova did likewise for Bulgaria against Ireland's Jennifer Lehane.

The other Paris 2024 National Olympic Committee qualifying places went to Romania through Lăcrămioara Perijoc and Britian through Charley Davison.

A Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist in Irma Testa of Italy beat Spain's Jennifer Fernández for a women's under-57kg quota place.

Svetlana Staneva of Bulgaria, Ireland's Michaela Walsh and France's Amina Zidani also reached the semi-finals in that weight division.

In the men's competition, four of the seven weight categories offered the full four quota places today.

Three-time world champion Sofiane Oumiha of France was among the notable winners in the under-63.5kg on a unanimous decision against Bilge Kağan Kanlı of Turkey.

Lasha Guruli sealed Georgia's only quota place of the day, Dean Clancy took one for Ireland and Richárd Kovács did so for Hungary.

Olympic silver medallist Oleksandr Khyzhniak of Ukraine went through 3-0 against Ireland's Kelyn Cassidy in the men's under-80kg.

The other quarter-finals were settled on unanimous decisions in favour of Gabrijel Veočić for Croatia's, Murad Allahverdiyev of Azerbaijan and Italy's Salvatore Cavallaro.

Olympic host nation France secured five quota places today, the last through Makan Traore with a 3-2 split decision victory against Azerbaijan's Sarkhan Aliyev at under-71kg.

European champion Vahid Abasov of Serbia was a 4-1 winner against Armenia's Gurgen Madoyan in the same weight category, with Denmark's Nikolai Terteryan and Turkey's Tuğrulhan Erdemir the other winners unanimously.

The other weight category with Paris 2024 places available was the men's under-57kg, in which Nebil Ibrahim of Sweden and Vasile Usturoi of Belgium won when the referee stopped their contests against Hungary's Roland Veres and Denmark's Frederik Lundgaard Jensen respectively.

Javier Ibáñez of Bulgaria and José Quiles of Spain were the other winners on points.

Tomorrow is set to mark a rest day in boxing at Kraków-Małopolska 2023, with semi-finals deciding quota places in four weight categories scheduled for Friday (June 30).
