Defending champions the United States were made to work hard to win their second game at the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Women's AmeriCup in León, Guanajuato, Mexico.

It was a back-and-forth affair between the two sides but a third quarter effort USA helped them  edge the game.

Lauren Betts also contributed to the win with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Despite trailing in the first half, Puerto Rico bounced back to gain valuable points against Colombia.

Thanks to Jazmon Gateley, they managed to secure a narrow 63-62 win

The 30-year-old contributed 20 points and eight rebounds while Arella Guirantes chipped in with 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Hosts Mexico also pulled off a comeback win in their opener against Dominican Republic.

Sofia Payan’s 15 points helped them post a 69-62 triumph.

Despite what the scoreline suggests, Mexico had a 10-point lead in the third quarter as Claudia Ramos and Aixchel Hernandez caused trouble up front.

However, Esmery Martinez, with 18 points, ensured that the Dominican Republic had something to fight for until the very end.

Brazil put on a show during their second game to ease past Venezuela 90-76.

It was a strong start from the Brazilians as Damiris Dantas grabbed 17 points.

Venezuela grew into the game and was only four points behind Brazil heading into the final quarter.

But Tainá Paixao and Débora Costa decided enough was enough, helping their country to a sensational fourth quarter score of 29-19 to seal a comfortable win.

On the first day of the tournament, Brazil beat Cuba 92-53 while the United States came out on top against Venezuela 80-54.
