Bahrain's Saeed Al-Khaldi and Edidiong Odiong ensured a golden double for their country by triumphing in the men's and women's 100 metres at the Pan Arab Games in Algeria.

Triple Asian Games champion Odiong blitzed the women's final at the Stade du 5 Juillet in capital city Algiers as she clocked in with a time of 11.27 seconds.

It was a one-two finish for Bahrain as Hajar Al-Khaldi followed her compatriot across the line 0.08 later.

Kuwaiti Mudhawi Al-Shammari made up the top three in 11.56 to bag the bronze medal.

In the men's event, Saeed Al-Khaldi bettered his leading semi-final time by 0.05 to take another Bahraini gold with a 10.22 finish.

He was joined on the podium by runner-up Chakir Machmour of Morocco and Oman's Barakat Al-Harthi in third.

Al-Harthi also medalled in the last edition of the Games 12 years ago with a 100m silver at Doha 2011.

Bahrain dominated much of the remaining women's athletics events on the first official day of competition.

Two-time Asian Games champion Oluwakemi Adekoya produced a barnstorming run in the 400m.

She crossed the line in 51.02 in front of Moroccan pair Salma Lehlali and Sara El Hachimi, who finished with times of 52.98 and 53.38 respectively.

Bontu Rebitu triumphed in the 5,000m in a time of 15mins 2.22secs and was joined in the top three by compatriot Roselidah Domongole 42.46sec later in third place.

The pair finished either side of Soukaine Atanane, who picked up another Moroccan medal in second as she registered 15:34.53.

Marta Yota's 4:15.30 sealed an additional Bahrain win in the 1500m before the country's last win of the day came courtesy of Aminat Jamal in the 100m hurdles in a time of 13.56.
