Santiago Giménez scored the only goal of the game with a brilliant solo effort in the 88^th minute in front of a 72,963-strong crowd at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

The 22-year-old began the final on the substitutes bench, with Henry Martin preferred over him, but with nothing separating the two sides he was brought on after 85 minutes.

Shortly after taking to the pitch, the Feyenoord striker struck to deliver Mexico's record-extending ninth title.

Panama had a corner but it came to nothing and Mexico's Orbelin Pineda came away with the ball and passed it to Giménez in the midfield.

He then surged into the opposition penalty area, spun away from one defender, beat another and slotting a left-footed shot past Orlando Mosquera in the Panamanian goal.

"It is indescribable," Giménez said.

"It is impressive how the group came together to move forward.

"I'm not saying it with words, it was seen with the title."

The finish marked his fourth international goal in 18 appearances and it sent the partisan crowd into frenzy.

The title adds to those won by Mexico in 1993, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2009, 2011, 2015 and 2019.

"We knew that we were playing to go down in the history of national soccer and opportunities must be seized," said Mexico's interim manager Jaime Lozano, who had led the country to Olympic bronze at Tokyo 2020 and was brought in for the Gold Cup after Diego Cocca was sacked last month.

Overall, Mexico were good value for their victory as they led the statistics for shots and possession while a superior pass accuracy also underpinned their performance.
