The first foreign athletes set to compete at the Chengdu 2021 International University Sports Federation (FISU) Summer World University Games have arrived in China before the Opening Ceremony next week.

A total of seven members from the Brazilian delegation arrived in the host city's Chengdu Tianfu International Airport and passed through customs which has been upgraded to minimise time spent at security.

"Chengdu is a big city," said the Brazilian press officer.

"A very prepared city for the World University Games and we are very happy to come here and participate.

"The Brazil delegation is arriving with 215 [members] and we are participating in 11 sports like volleyball, basketball, swimming etc.

The airport has arranged for six express lanes to be added at customs, eight self-service declaration for COVID-19 infections, and two baggage declaration windows to ensure smooth passage for visiting delegations arriving for the Opening Ceremony on July 28.

Deputy chief of the Brazilian delegation, known as Alessandro, arrived in Chengdu for the second time following a heads of delegation meeting in March.

"We want to check in at the Universiade Village in advance for a series of preparations later," he said.

"The Games will be successful here in Chengdu and I hope the athletes from Brazil will compete well.

"This competition is very important for [the athletes] because in another year, next year, there is the Olympics.

"It's like another step for the Olympics, they start here.

"They start in the beginning in college and this is a very important competition in their life and in their journey as an athlete."
