Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallist Santiago Lange of Argentina has missed out on a Paris 2024 qualification spot in the Nacra 17 competition at the Sailing World Championships in The Hague.

The seven-time Olympian, who also has two Olympic bronze medals in tornado, was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2014, forcing him to go into surgery. 

However, the 61-year-old showed great spirit in standing on top of the podium in Brazil after having a part of his lung removed.

In The Netherlands, Lange and teammate Vicky Travascio failed to qualify for the Olympics in the French capital next year, bringing an end to an illustrious sailing career. 

"This will be the last racing of my Olympic career that began in 1980," Lange was quoted as saying by Nacra 17 Class after the race.  

"I have been very emotional all week, but I also remember my career fondly."

Britain's Emma Wilson and Luuc van Opzeeland took pole position on the first day of windfoiling.

Olympic bronze medallist Wilson made a strong start to the women's iQFOiL contest as she picked up a win and finished inside the top four in each of the first five heats to sit first overall.

She has a two-point lead over 2021 world champion Helene Noesmoen of France who finished the day by taking the last two races in the yellow fleet.

China's Zheng Yan currently occupies third place with a net score of 11 which puts her behind the leaders by three points and one point, respectively.

Despite winning the seventh and eighth men's iQFOiL races of the day, Italy's Nicolo Renna sits second on 18 points.

He is behind home favourite Luuc van Opzeeland on 14.

The Dutchman had a nightmare race on the final event of the day as he finished 21st and was forced to use his discard.

Germany's Sebastian Kordel has control of third place as it stands with 20.7 points to his name.

Van Opzeeland is searching for his first World Championships gold after winning silver last year in Brest and bronze the year before in Silvaplana.

Paris 2024 Olympic Games Test Event champion Lauriane Nolot has retaken the lead in the women's Formula Kite competition.

The French athlete won four of five races in the yellow fleet to surge into top spot on eight points, while Britain's Ellie Aldridge who finished second at the Olympic warm-up in Marseille.

Alridge is one of four Brits in the top six with Lily Young third on 12 points.

Katie Dabson and Madeleine Anderson are then sitting in fifth and sixth, respectively.

Maximilian Maeder of Singapore is dominating the yellow fleet in the men's Formula Kite as he won three more races today.

However, across the whole discipline he has just a one-point lead over Slovenian Toni Vodisek while Axel Mazella of France is three points further back in third.
