Canada’s men’s and women’s teams will be hoping to make home advantage count as they aim to emerge victorious from North American rugby sevens qualifier for next year’s Olympics in Paris.

The 6,000-seater Starlight Stadium in Langford in British Columbia is set to play host to 12 teams over the next two days.

Having failed to secure a top-four finish in the men’s World Rugby Sevens Series, the United States and Canada are poised to do battle in the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Sevens.

Canada have been placed in Pool B along with Jamaica, Barbados and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The US headline Pool A that also features Mexico and Bermuda.

The top two from each group will advance to the semi-finals.

Phil Berna will lead the Canadian team that features Cooper Coats who helped their country reach Tokyo 2020 at the same tournament in 2019.

But Josiah Morra, also part of their squad four years ago, has been forced out at the last minute through injury.

"I'm continually impressed by our group," said Canada interim head coach Sean White.

"Their effort level, attention to detail, and consistent willingness to make the small adjustments in training allow them to grow as a collective.

"We've had this date circled on our calendar for over a year now.

"To host it in front of our home crowd, family and friends is going to be special. We're ready to take the challenge head-on."

Canada are scheduled to go up against Jamaica, Mexico, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Lucia.

The winner of the men’s and women’s RAN Sevens will qualify for Paris 2024, with the teams that finish second and third advancing to a final qualification tournament, scheduled for June next year.
