The Azeris went into the decider as favourites by virtue of holding the top seed at the Arena Zagreb.

However, they could not live up to expectations and eventually fell to a 4-1 defeat in the capital.

The first contest saw women's under-63kg athletes Emmy Galludec of France and Azerbaijan's Khadizha Gadashova go head-to-head.

Galludec wasted no time as she threw her opponent to the tatami for an ippon, giving France the first point.

The French lead was short lived though as European Youth Olympic Festival gold medallist Aslan Kotsoev dispatched David Gnafoua after just 51 seconds. 

The men's under-81kg bout saw Kotsoev execute two hip throws, with the first worthy of a waza-ari before the ippon put a stop to the contest. 

Leoni Minkada-Caquineau put France back in the lead with a massive uchimata ippon before Matheo Akiana Mongo pulled off an upset against world number one Ramazan Ahmadov to make it 3-1.

Mel Le Cam then put the contest to bed, making the score 4-1 to France, following a double waza-ari triumph over Maryam Bayramzade.

Turkey and Japan beat Brazil and Uzbekistan, respectively, earlier in the day to make up the podium with the bronze medals.

In the individual contests, Azerbaijan, Japan, and Serbia all picked up two gold medals but three silvers set the Azeris apart and put them on top spot.
