The Cuban triple jumper has received the bronze medal she was due at Beijing 2008 after it emerged that her rivals who overtook her had done so illegally, using banned substances.

Justice takes time in today's world, but better late than never. This seems to be the motto behind the recognition of Cuban Yargelis Savigne when, more than 15 years later, she is awarded the bronze medal she would have won at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when her rivals Tatiana Lebedeva and Hrysopiyi Devetzi beat her by using banned substances.

The Cuban Olympic Committee has awarded the bronze medal to the Cuban triple jumper Yargelis Savigne after it was discovered that two athletes who outperformed her at the Olympic Games in China had doped to perform better.

Russia's Tatiana Lebedeva had used the banned substance Turinabol and Greece's Hrysopiyi Devetzi had taken Stanozolol, both being anabolic steroids commonly used by athletes to increase muscle mass, strength, and performance.

It is worth noting that the authorities have now disqualified them after confirming the use of banned substances and cheating to reach the Olympic podium in China in 2008. "Lebedeva and Devetzi were banned for doping, and I became an Olympic bronze medallist," Savigne told "Play-Off Magazine."

"I would have preferred to enjoy it in full competition and not find out almost ten years later in 2017," she lamented. "In the end, I accepted it, and I am very happy about it, but I felt pain when I finished fifth in Beijing. It wasn't fair."

It should be remembered that the Cuban triple jumper Yargelis Savigne, who now deservedly won bronze in Beijing 2008, had jumped 15.05 metres at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. She finished fifth (third if the other competitors had not won their places in the worst possible way).

On this occasion, the gold medal went to Francoise Mbango Etone of Cameroon with a mark of 15.39 metres, a medal she still wears with pride, now in the company of the Cuban.

In addition to the Olympic bronze medal, the 39-year-old Guantanamo-born Cuban is a two-time World triple jump Champion , having won the titles at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka and the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, as well as finishing runner-up at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki.
