The Japanese Sambo Championship was held in Tokyo on 4th February. In the 50th anniversary year of the tournament, competitions were held in men's and women's Sport SAMBO and men's Combat SAMBO. There were also tournaments for masters and high school students.

As the organisers noted, the national SAMBO championship attracted many athletes from other martial arts, who competed not only for tournament medals, but also for the opportunity to represent Japan in international tournaments this year.

"I am glad that we were able to hold the 50th All-Japan Sambo Championship, which is very popular among athletes today. SAMBO is actively developing in the world, and we will make every effort to popularise and develop Japanese SAMBO," said Masaaki Kondo, President of the Japan Sambo Federation.

The championship will be remembered for its interesting fights, including some of the most significant. 2014 World Championships silver medallist Takeuchi, who turned 50 this year, competed in the Combat SAMBO tournament in the -88 kg weight category and won a landslide victory over his opponent in the final. In the women's -80kg category, 2013 Universiade champion Takahashi took first place, beating all her rivals by a clear margin.

The awards for best technique and the title of MVP of the tournament went to the men's -71kg winner, Iguchi, and the women's -54kg winner, Yoshino.
