FISU Oceania spotlighted the Fiji National University (FNU), which was established in its current form in 2010 through the merger of six tertiary institutions and currently has 16 main campuses and centres with over 2000 students.

These institutions were the Fiji Institute of Technology, the Fiji School of Nursing, the Fiji College of Advanced Education, the Lautoka Teachers College, the Fiji School of Medicine and the Fiji College of Agriculture. This is significant because all students have the opportunity to excel in their academic field, as well as participate in opportunities and experiences that help students grow personally and professionally.

This university was highlighted because sport is well embedded within the university and students, staff and the local community are encouraged to stay active and reach their potential in sport and fitness. The university currently has campuses and centres in 33 locations across the country. It has several sports complexes at all of its campuses, but the jewel in FNU's crown is undoubtedly its new sports complex: the FNU Fitness and Wellness Centre.

The FNU Fitness and Wellness Centre was opened in 2023 on the university's Nasinu campus. The facility houses a fitness area, a multi-purpose court on the ground floor and four sports science classrooms on the second floor.

This state of the art facility has provided the opportunity to expand competition opportunities as part of the annual Fiji University Games and for local community sport. As well as hosting competitions, the facility also provides valuable learning space for students studying Sports Science and Sports Education.

The three main sports courses are offered on campus. Students can study for a Certificate or Diploma in Sports Science or a Bachelor of Physical Education and Exercise Science. In fact, the Bachelor's programme will welcome its first graduates in 2024.

Currently, most of FNU's Sports Science graduates work in the sports industry as club coaches, strength and conditioning coaches, sports development officers, while two of them are now employed at FNU as assistant lecturers in the Sports Science programme.  There are also FNU graduates working with Fiji's Olympic gold medal winning Flying Fijians Rugby 7s team as team strength and conditioning coaches and there are also students representing Fiji in various sporting competitions.

As the only university in Fiji to offer sports science programmes, the university hopes to establish a Centre of Sports Excellence to further promote and develop sport in the country.
