World Relays: USA reigns with Noah Lyles

The World Athletics Relays concluded this Sunday in Nassau, Bahamas, after two exciting days, and now 14 teams have already qualified for each of the five relay events at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Three-time Budapest 2023 world champion Noah Lyles (100m, 200m and 4x100m) led the United States to victory over Canada in the men's 4x100m and remains on course for a historic haul of four gold medals (100m, 200m, 4x100m and 4x400m) at Paris 2024. Lyles took the baton from Kyree King and accelerated across the line in 37.40 seconds, after slick early handovers from Courtney Lindsey and Kenneth Bednarek, to run in 8.88. "Business is easy! It smells like Paris!" said the 26-year-old sprint starter from Gainesville, Florida.

Canada took silver in 37.89 thanks to a late charge from Olympic 200m champion Andre de Grasse. Reigning Olympic 100m gold medallist Marcell Jacobs ran the second leg for Italy, the reigning Olympic champions, but was later disqualified after finishing third. France eventually took bronze (38.44).

It was the main attraction on the second and final day of the World Athletics World Relays, with four of the five victories coming from the United States. In the women's 4x100, Tamari David, Gabby Thomas, Celera Barnes and an amazing Melissa Jefferson, who ran a sub-10.98, won in a time of 41.85, followed by France (42.75) and Great Britain (42.80).

In the women's 4x400m final, the USA, with Quanera Hayes, a 'repeating' and brilliant Gabby Thomas (49.58), Bailey Lear and a great Alexis Holmes (49.63), gave their opponents no chance, finishing in 3:21.70, with Poland second in 3:24.71 (Natalia Kaczmarek the last in 49.46) and Canada third (3:25.17).

The 4x400 mixed relay provided one of the best races of the weekend, with the United States and the Netherlands battling for gold down to the last metre. The Americans won with Matthew Boling, Lynna Irby-Jackson, Willington Wright and Kendall Ellis (3:10.73) despite a great effort from double world champion and current 400m indoor world recordwoman Femke Bol, who ran 49.63 (3:11.45). Ireland finished third with a national record of 3:11.53 with Rhasidat Adeleke running the second leg in an astonishing 48.45.

The only event in which the USA didn't win a medal was the men's 4x400, due to a disqualification in the first leg on Saturday. Twenty-year-old Letsile Tebogo, a silver medallist in the 100m and a bronze medallist in the 200m at the last World Championships, decided to help Botswana in what was a very long race for him and stunned everyone by winning in 2:59.11 in 43.92, followed by South Africa (3:00.75) and Belgium (3:01.06). The USA booked their ticket to Paris in the second qualifying round with a great time of 2:59.95.

The top two home teams from the final in Nassau will receive a favourable draw for lane five in each of the two semi-finals in Paris. Third and fourth finishers will be placed in lane six, fifth and sixth in lane four and seventh and eighth in lane seven.
