The same prize money will be awarded for medals won by athletes from both committees, thanks to a €7.5 million grant approved by the Spanish government. Paralympic athletes will receive 54 per cent more than at Tokyo 2020.

The approval of a 7.5 million euro allocation by the Spanish Council of Ministers will allow Paralympic athletes to receive the same cash prize for each medal won as Olympic athletes. The two committees are now on an equal footing.

The last allocation was €94,000 for gold, €48,000 for silver and €30,000 for bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The prizes were different for pairs in sports such as tennis and table tennis. In this case, the prizes were €75,000 for each, €37,000 for silver and €25,000 for bronze.

The same applies to team sports with more than three members, such as basketball, rugby, football for the blind or equestrian sports. €50,000 per member was awarded for a gold medal, €29,000 for silver and €18,000 for bronze.

Accompanying athletes (such as athletics and triathlon guides, tandem pilots, etc.) will receive the same amount as the disabled athlete they accompany. Technical staff will also receive an allowance, but at a lower level.

This achievement follows the approval of the General Assembly of the Spanish Paralympic Committee. The Higher Sports Council and the Spanish Paralympic Committee will jointly finance these allocations and the exceptional training and development grants for winning medals in the Paralympic Games. This is unprecedented news as it is the first time that the two Committees have been on an equal footing.

After a long journey of advocacy and struggle for full equality by the Paralympic Committee, the allocations have been equalised.
