Sonny_WebsterDecember 19 - A young weightlifter finished the year on a high by setting a new British junior record at the Youth Commonwealth Games in Malaysia.

Sixteen-year-old Sonny Webster (pictured) took the silver medal after lifting a total 258kg in the 77kg category.

Webster, from Ivybridge, Devon, finished second in the youth event - and third in the juniors event - in Penang, after finding his form and recording both a new personal best and British age record in the snatch.

Webster totalled 115kg from his snatch, lifting 110kg with his first lift, then 115kg with his second before just missing out on 117kg on the lock-out for his third attempt.

And in the clean and jerk he was also successful with his opening attempt, lifting 138kg before moving on to 143kg with his second.

Again, he missed out on 146kg, but his total of 258kg was a personal best by five kilos, leaving both Webster and coaches Andy Sutor and Tamas Feher happy.

Webster's performance would still have given him third spot in the higher 85kg group.
