NAKMASMarch 4 - Karate in the UK is set for a major boost after the move by its two governing bodies to formally work closer together on regulation and governance in karate.

Since the demise of Karate England, the emergence of the National Association of Karate and Martial Art Schools (NAKMAS) and the Federation of English Karate Organisations (FEKO) saw governance of karate in the England split.

While both organisations have shared common ground over the past few years, both have now formally declared a more joined up approach.

Joe Ellis, the chairman of NAKMAS, said: "NAKMAS and FEKO share a common goal - to better the governance of karate on a national and international level.

"Those coaching karate and those learning the art should be protected and allowed to function within a solid infrastructure with fairness and equality for all central to that infrastructure.

"Together, NAKMAS and FEKO represent the majority of British karate interests.

"It makes sense that we work more closely to provide the best level of governance for all of our members and karate students.

"Perhaps now more than ever, as we approach the London Olympics next year, a united face of British karate sends a signal to the rest of the world that we are a prominent voice and leader in advancing standards in martial arts globally.

"While this is not a merger, we will be equal partners working together for a common goal."

Alan Carruthers, Chairman of Federation of English Karate Organisations (FEKO), says: "NAKMAS and FEKO have, for many years, been working towards the same goals which are to progress karate forward without unnecessary restrictions on the membership.

"We believe mutual co-operation between our groups will enhance this process. Karate-ka should have the freedom of choice to train and compete with their fellow practitioners regardless of affiliation."

NAKMAS has made enormous advances in developing martial arts by boosting equality and diversity standards in martial arts for which it has secured the Equality Standard: A Framework for Sport, child welfare policies and raising coaching standards.

NAKMAS has also achieved a National and International Quality Standard Certificate via the BSI (British Standards Institute).

FEKO was at the forefront, by working with others, to develop a child protection policy tailored especially for the martial arts.

Its Coach/Instructors Qualification programme, CRB registration etc ensures that those who teach have the latest knowledge and comply with legal requirements.

Since 1998 FEKO has been in direct membership of world bodies for the purpose of developing its squad and refereeing programmes.

FEKO's success is reflected in the number of referees that have achieved World Referee and Judge status, and members who have secured world recognition.
