Marisol_Casado_head_and_shouldersApril 4 - International Triathlon Union (ITU) President Marisol Casado has been appointed chair of a worldwide project to create a Global Framework for Recognition of Coaching Competence and Qualifications, it was announced here today.


The announcement was made by the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) at the 35th General Assembly here, which is taking place at the SportAccord International Convention at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel.

Casado, who is also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), said: "It is truly an honour to serve on a global project on behalf of the International Olympic sport federations.

"I am committed to dedicating my best effort to achieving the ASOIF's long-held initiative, and working closely with member federations and experts in this field."

ASOIF in conjunction with the International Council for Coach Education (ICCE) established the initiative which has been in operation for the last two years.

ASOIF and ICCE have agreed to work jointly on the project and Casado will serve on the working group along with the IOC through its new Entourage Commission.

The working group aims to develop global, non-sport-specific standards which can easily be adapted by different sports and cultures, and members of the group will meet for the next two years, concluding in London during the 2012 Olympic Games.

Casado, who has been President of the ITU since 2008 after being elected at the ITU Congress in her hometown of Madrid in Spain, has extensive experience and expertise in the Olympic sport of triathlon as one of the founding members of the Spanish Triathlon Federation and was also heavily involved in the creation of ITU in Avignon in 1989.

She has served as Secretary General of the Spanish Triathlon Federation as well as Treasurer for ITU, while she was elected as a member of the IOC in February 2010 at the 122nd IOC Session ahead of the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

Shortly after, she was appointed to the Coordination Commission for the second Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing in 2014.
