Pyeongchang_2018_choir_May_14_2011May 15 - Thousands of volunteers in South Korea and the United States have joined forces to sing in support of Pyeongchang's bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.

The special choir sang "Grand March" from opera "Aida" and Korean folk song "Arirang" under the direction of maestro Chung Myung-whun at a plaza in front of Seoul City Hall, an event organised by the non-profit support group World Harmony Chorus.

A total of 2,018 Seoul citizens who gathered at the Seoul Plaza participated in the singing as well as the same number of local residents in Pyeongchang.

Several dozen ethnic Koreans in the US also joined in the chorus from the New York office of the national Korea Broadcasting System (KBS).

The event was broadcast live by KBS.

"[We] decided to show Pyeongchang's passion and enthusiasm through the nationwide Grand Chorus Celebration," the group said.

A similar but smaller performance was held in Pyeongchang when an International Olympic Committee (IOC) Evaluation Commission visited there earlier this year.
