Thames Path_on_South_BankDecember 19 - Qatari-based Al Jazeera Sport, who hold the Olympic broadcasting rights for the Middle East region, have applied to Lambeth Council for planning permission to build a temporary television studio on the South Bank for their coverage of the London 2012 Olympics Games.

The company, who are headquartered in Doha, are hoping to build a temporary television studio on the Thames Path at the observation point owned by Coin Street Community Builders.

The proposed studio will have panoramic views of the capital including the iconic landmark St Paul's Cathedral which sits at the top of Ludgate Hill, the highest point in the City of London.

The site is close to ITV's London Television Centre situated on the South Bank and the proposed temporary television studio will be connected to technical facilities inside the ITV building.

If permission is granted, the temporary structure will be in place for the majority of July and August next year when the Olympic Games take place.

Al Jazeera's planning agents, Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners, say that the proposed studio "will help celebrate the 2012 Olympics within Lambeth".

Al Jazeera Sport also owns the exclusive broadcasting rights in the Middle East for major football leagues, such as the Spanish La Liga, the French Ligue 1 and the Italian Serie A.

But interest in the Olympic Games has increased in the region due to with Doha announcing a bid for the 2020 Olympic Games following the country's shock success in securing the right to stage the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Doha is up against Baku, Madrid, Istanbul, Rome and Tokyo for the right to stage the 2020 Olympics with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) set to choose the host city at their Session in Buenos Aires on September 7, 2013.
