March 11 - Victor Conte claims that Dwain Chambers (pictured) has been forced to finally sever his ties with him so he can continue trying to rebuild his career without being hounded by the authorities.

The sprinter, banned for two years in 2003 after testing positive for banned anabolic steroids provided by Conte, revealed on the eve of the World Indoor Championships in Doha that he has ended his relationship with the controversial founder and owner of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (Balco) after Charles van Commenee, Britain's head coach, ordered him to.

Chambers said: "As far as I'm concerned that relationship has to be terminated and it is terminated.

"I just want a clear run now, I just want to concentrate on running, I've had enough of the past.

"I know it's always going to be referred to but I just want to concentrate on what happens in 2010."

Conte continued to advise Chambers on legal ways to boost his performance even after his ban ended in 2005 and, as insidethegames exclusively revealed last year, the Londoner had claimed the American was behind his victory in the 60 metres at the European Indoor Championships in Turin.

Conte had devised a programme for Chambers that involved him alternately breathing low and high oxygen air through a hypoxicator in a technique that causes the body to begin creating its own Erythropoietin (EPO), the hormone that stimulates red blood cell production.

Lamine Diack, the President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), had led the calls for Chambers to end the relationship.

Van Commenee has admitted that he ordered Chambers to cease communication with Conte if he wanted to stop being treated like a pariah.

Chambers was rewarded for dropping Conte by being included as part of the official British delegation who appeared at a pre-Championship press conference in Doha.

Conte (pictured) exclusively told insidethegames: "I have worked with Dwain Chambers for many years and we have learned a lot from each other.

"Dwain is now being forced to stay at a distance, so he can be allowed to earn a living and provide for his family.

"I fully understand and support his decision to do what he must do in order to continue his athletic career."

Chambers, who won the silver medal at the last World Indoor Championships in Valencia two years ago, is the fastest sprinter in the field in Doha after his closest rival, America's Ivory Williams, was banned for three months following a positive test for marijuana.

Conte said: "I hope that Dwain wins a gold medal in Doha because in my opinion he deserves it after all of the adversity he has overcome.

"I consider Dwain to be like a son and will always remain being one of his biggest fans."
