It was quite a foregone conclusion, but the four-time Olympic gold medallist put a bow on it on Sunday, as she aced the US trials in Minneapolis and will lead another American bid for glory in Paris 2024, just three years removed from her disconcerting case of the ‘twisties’ during the Tokyo Games.

Noah Lyles won the final of the 200-metre dash Saturday, which will allow him to fight for the speed double at the Paris Games, as Sha'Carri Richardson's dreams of an Olympic sprint double ended in disappointment at the US trials. The world champion of the 100m had looked poised to claim at least a top-three finish in the women's 200m after the Texan had shone in the semifinals on Friday with a time of 21.92. 

Simone Biles continued her march toward the Paris Olympics on Friday with a dynamic day one at the US gymnastics trials that featured brilliance and a little reminder that she's human, too. The four-time Olympic gold medallist thrilled the Target Center crowd with her signature Yurchenko double pike vault, now also known as the Biles II. She earned 15.975 points for the vault which no other woman has attempted in competition.

The world champion sprinter pounded the track, then her chest in the US Olympic trials in Eugene on Saturday as she won the 100metre race and sealed her ticket for Paris 2024, where she will face stiffer competition from Jamaicans Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Shericka Jackson and Elaine Thompson-Herah.

With a world record in the 100m backstroke, Regan Smith clocked 57.13 at the US Olympic Swimming Trials on Tuesday, challenging Australia's Kaylee McKeown just six weeks before the Paris Games.
