Kenya has become the 54th member of The Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL), it has been confirmed.

The African country is the second from the continent to join the organisation, following in the footsteps of neighbours Uganda.

Their membership was confirmed following a postal vote of existing Federation members.

FIL Director of Development Tom Hayes welcomed Kenya to the fold.

"The Federation welcomes its second African nation to the membership of lacrosse playing nations," he said.

"The development of lacrosse in East Africa has been a highlight of the growth of lacrosse worldwide."

Lacrosse is said to have grown slowly in Kenya, but the sport is now beginning to gain popularity.

"Before June 2014, children attending the many schools throughout the Mukuru slum outside of Nairobi had never seen a lacrosse stick," said the KLA's Jennifer Macleod.

"Since then, the number of lacrosse playing schools has reached five.

"Now over 200 students are practicing daily and playing lacrosse games every week, and there’s a waiting list for hundreds of more interested students."
