Panama celebrated six gold medals as the athletics competition drew to a close at the Para Central American Games in Managua.

Their first success of the day came in a field event at the IND Olympic Stadium, with Róger Savedra triumphing in the men’s F11 javelin competition.

His effort was swiftly followed by success on the track for the Panama team, with Olbeniz Atencio emerging as the winner of the men’s T13 1,500 metes in a Games record time of 4min 51.70sec.

Anastasio Stephen was able to claim gold in the men’s T12 400m competition, adding to his victory in the 200m event two days ago.

Ana Galvez had won the women’s 200m event after Stephen had triumphed in the men’s competition and history repeated itself, as the Panama athlete secured victory in the 400m final.

Their gold medal haul was completed by Jhan Windson and Enrique Ornano, who emerged as the winners of the men's T20 and T36 400m events, respectively.

Gabriel Cuadra Holmann led Nicaragua's efforts on the closing day of athletics, as he secured his second gold medal of the Games.

Holmann, who helped design the logo of the Games, won the men's T38 1,500m in a time of 5:01.48.

His compatriot Luis Prado also earned a gold medal, as he topped the podium in the men's T38 400m by achieving a time of 57.48.

Guatemala’s Oscar Rexon won his third title by earning victory in the men’s T11 1,500m, before his team-mate Wilson Garcia clinched the men’s T47 400m gold.

Hosts Nicaragua continued to impress in the men’s wheelchair basketball competition, with their team continuing their unbeaten record.

They were challenged in the opening stages of their match against Panama, but eventually emerged as 76-31 winners.

Costa Rica overcame Guatemala 50-35, while El Salvador were convincing 55-18 winners against Honduras.

In the women’s event, Guatemala beat Honduras 14-0, before El Salvador secured an 8-0 win over Nicaragua.

Competition will continue tomorrow, with the women’s medal matches due to take place on Saturday (January 27).

The men’s medal matches will be held the following day, when the second edition of the Games draw to a close.
