Defending champion Srikanth Kidambi crashed out of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Indonesia Open after a tough defeat to Japan's Kento Momota today in Jakarta.

Momota was unseeded and drew a tough opponent as the Indian was also beaten by him in straight sets at the semi-final stage of the Malaysia Open last week.

History duly repeated itself despite a tougher battle at the newly-refurbished Istora Gelora Bung Karno in this HSBC BWF World Tour Super 1000 event.

Srikanth took the first set 21-12 but then lost the next two 21-14, 15-12 in a contest lasting exactly an hour.

Unseeded Dane Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus also progressed today when South Korean second seed Son Wan-ho was forced to retire injured.

Vittinghus only spent six minutes on court when the match was ended prematurely, when he led 11-6.

Sixth seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei also beat Hong Kong’s Wong Wing Ki Vincent 21-17, 21-11 elsewhere in the men's singles draw.

Anders Antonsen of Denmark beat Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto 21-14, 25-23.

Top seed Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei battled past Japan’s Saena Kawakami in the women's singles.

The Malaysia winner won the first set 21-11 before surviving a sterner examination in the second for a 23-21 win.

Aya Ohori of Japan also battled past American Beiwen Zhang 21-15, 21-23, 21-11 in 51 minutes.

Other winners included China's eighth seed He Bingjiao, who was far too strong for Hong Kong’s Cheung Ngan Yi in a 21-19, 21-13 success.
