Former world number one James Willstrop of England set up a meeting with second seed Ali Farag as he beat Scotland's Alan Clyne in the opening round of the Professional Squash Association Oracle NetSuite Open in San Francisco.

Willstrop recorded a comfortable 11-8, 11-4, 12-10 victory to progress at the tournament in the American city.

Egypt's Farag, given a bye in the first round, awaits for the English player tomorrow.

Frenchman Gregoire Marche will play top seed Mohamed Elshorbagy, also of Egypt, after he overcame Wales' Joel Makin 11-7, 11-6, 11-5.

In the women's event, home favourite Amanda Sobhy - the highest-ranked American-born female player of all-time - secured an 11-5, 11-4, 11-4 win over Australia's former world number one Rachael Grinham.

Sobhy will next face Camille Serme of France, the third seed, in the next round.

"Rachael is incredibly tricky to play and hits some incredible shots, so I'm just happy to get a decent performance in and get that first win," said Sobhy.

"I've played a few team events in the last month but it's a completely different vibe at a major event so I'm happy to get that first one out of the way.

"I'm exited to play Camille tomorrow.

"I'm the underdog now and have no pressure on me but I want to go out there and prove that I belong on this stage.

"I want to get my ranking back to where it was before the injury and I'll have the home crowd, and some friends, behind me so there's even more incentive to win."

The tournament is scheduled to continue tomorrow.
