The squash community has been celebrating World Squash Day, which is today, by taking to social media.

On Twitter, an official World Squash Day account has been sharing messages from fans about the event, which was launched by a group of squash friends following the September 11 terror attacks in New York City in 2001.

Numerous members of the New York squash community were killed, including Derek Sword, a former Scottish junior international.

Peter Nicol, a former team mate of Sword's, is the President of World Squash Day.

Nicol won three Commonwealth Games gold medals during his career, including Melbourne 2006 doubles and singles titles, and was crowded world champion in 1999.

To mark the occasion, England Squash shared posts from individuals discussing mental health and how the sport has given them an avenue to enjoy life.

Today is also World Mental Health Day.

Others dressed in costumes and many posted pictures of themselves playing squash.

The World Squash Federation promoted World Squash Day on Twitter too, reminding people to look at its auction which is raising money for players suffering financially because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Items on sale include a squash ball signed by former world number one Ali Farag of Egypt, a World Squash Day 2019 shirt signed by a number of Professional Squash Association World Tour players, and goggles signed by England's Daryl Selby.
