Russia has moved to within touching distance of securing 100 gold medals at the inaugural Games of the Commonwealth of Independent States Countries, which draw to a close on Sunday (September 12).

The hosts have largely dominated events across the Games. and prior to the final two days of competition, they claimed 96 gold medals and are well on their way to top triple figures. 

This included nine of 14 total golds in sambo.

One of the few fighters to resist the Russian onslaught was Azerbaijan's Nijat Mammadli in the 58-kilogram category.

After his victor, Mammadli said: "It was very difficult in the final fight. With the help of the coaches' advice, which they did during the fight, I was able to win. I am glad that we managed to complete the performances with gold."

Russia also won the only badminton gold of the Games to date and all four table tennis golds.

Kazakhstan - three - and Azerbaijan - one - were the only countries to win golds in shotgun shooting, while Russia won 11 of 16 Muay Thai golds.

"This is my first international tournament!" said Huseyn Aliyev, who won the 60kg category.

"I can't express my emotions in words. 

"I am very happy with the victory."

Medals were also awarded in ballroom dance, with Russia winning two gold and two bronzes - Moldova won the other two silvers of the Games so far.

"We are extremely happy with both the dance and the result," gold medallists German Pugachev and Ariadna Tishova said. 

"Many thanks to everyone who supported us, the champions said after the ceremony. 

"Of course, such results would not have been possible without our teachers, we work as a large team, and all our achievements are our common victories."

Outstanding medals in badminton, table tennis, rifle and pistol shooting, ballroom dancing and rhythmic gymnastics.
