Turkey’s European champion Vedat Albayrak produced a stunning performance to win the men’s under-81 kilograms crown at the International Judo Federation Baku Grand Slam.

With just 12 seconds on the clock, Albayrak threw Croatia’s Dominik Družeta onto his head for a sensational ippon to win the match in the Azerbaijani capital.

Canada’s Francois Gauthier-Drapeau and Azerbaijan’s Eljan Hajiyev won two bronze medal bouts in the division.

Russia’s Makhmadbek Makhmadbekov saw off Japan’s Ken Oyoshi to win the men’s under-73kg title.

Oyoshi was penalised three times as Makhmadbekov emerged victorious.

Mongolia’s Olympic bronze medallist Tsend-Ochiryn Tsogtbaatar and Azerbaijan’s Hidayat Heydarov also secured podium spots after winning their bronze medal matches.


Lucy Renshall of Britain secured her second Grand Slam title of the year after overcoming Gankhaich Bold of Mongolia in the women’s under-63kg final.

The British judoka, who triumphed in the Turkish city Antalya in April and came second in the French capital Paris last month, continued her impressive form as she beat Bold with an ippon.

The bronze medals went to Venezuela’s Anriquelis Barrios and Japan’s Megumi Horikawa.

Japan’s Utana Terada came out on top in the women’s under-70kg final after securing an ippon to defeat Lara Cvjetko of Croatia in the gold-medal match.

Germany’s Miriam Butkereit and Britain’s Kelly Petersen-Pollard bagged the bronze medals.

Competition is due to conclude tomorrow with the finals of the women's under-78kg, women's over-78kg, men's under-90kg, men's under-100kg and men's over-100kg.
