The men's and women's 1,000m competitions both got underway today after 500m and 1,500m racing began yesterday.

Dion progressed through his preliminary with a time of 1min 27.042sec before clocking 1:26.490 on his way through the heats.

His compatriot Charles Hamelin, a five-time Olympic and 14-time World Championships gold medallist, was the top performer as he notched 1:24.988 in the preliminaries and bettered it with a 1:24.388 in the heats, the quickest time at both stages.

A total of 20 skaters reached the quarter-finals, with seven winning both their preliminary and heat races.

That includes the in-form Hwang Dae-heon of South Korea, a silver medallist at Pyeongchang 2018, with times of 1:26.225 and 1:25.381 respectively.

In the women's 1,000m, World Cup leader Suzanne Schulting of The Netherlands, who is also the reigning European and world champion in all three short track distances, clocked 1:35.231 in the preliminaries but had to settle for second with 1:30.862 as she progressed from the heats.

Kristen Santos of the United States, second in the season standings, won both her races in 1:30.978 and 1:29.452, with only Arianna Fontana - whose eight short-track Olympic medals is more than any other female athlete - performing better.

The Italian clocked 1:34.306 in the preliminaries and followed it up with a 1:29.298 in the heats.

Eight teams progressed to the women's 3,000m relay semi-finals.

Canada were the top performers with a time of 4:06.941, although World Cup leaders The Netherlands were closely behind in the following heat with 4:06.976.

The Dutch also comfortably recorded the best time in the men's 5,000m relay quarter-finals, clocking 6:42.778.

China were next quickest with 6:46.593, while hosts and World Cup leaders Hungary progressed with 6:57.469.

The relay semi-finals are scheduled for tomorrow, following the conclusion of the men's and women's 500m and 1,500m events.
