Rio 2016 discus medallist Niamh McCarthy has announced her retirement, having represented Ireland at two Paralympic Games.

McCarthy won the F41 discus silver medal at Rio 2016, before finishing fifth at Tokyo 2020.

The Cork athlete also won a silver medal at the 2017 World Championships and bronze at the 2019 edition.

European titles were further won in 2018 and 2021.

McCarthy "has represented her country with distinction and has provided some wonderful moments along the way," Paralympics Ireland President Eimear Breathnach said.

"I would like to congratulate Niamh on a fantastic career and, on behalf of all in Paralympics Ireland, I would like to wish her all the best in the future".

McCarthy, 27, said now was the "time for me to focus on new challenges that will bring me other opportunities to enjoy", but expressed a desire to "continue being a part of Paralympic sport where I hope I can be of help".
