A Birmingham restaurant is set to offer free food to Malaysian athletes competing at this year’s Commonwealth Games in the English city.

Malaysian Delight is looking to support athletes travelling from Malaysia to participate at Birmingham 2022 by offering free meals during the event.

It is not the first time the restaurant has showed such generosity, having provided the offer whenever Malaysians compete in Birmingham.

"Every time they come to our restaurant, we give them free food," Ziwen Boo, manager of Malaysian Delight told the Birmingham Mail.

Malaysia has achieved more than 200 medals in its Commonwealth Games history.

Much of the country’s success has come in badminton where it has earned 29 gold medals, 21 silver and 14 bronze.

Several players have left the Badminton Association of Malaysia to become independent, meaning they will need to pay for their own coaching, travel and accommodation at competitions.

Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie, who claimed mixed team silver at Gold Coast 2018, are among those who have decided to make that move.

"For all the independent players, it's a support for them," said Ziwen per the Birmingham Mail.

"It's not a big deal for us.

"It’s a way to support Malaysians overseas.

"They fight for glory in Malaysia."

Ziwen added: "Mostly it’s the independent players who are getting closer to us but the badminton association players are also very friendly to us.

"The offer of free food is open to them as well."

Birmingham is due to stage the Commonwealth Games from July 28 to August 8 with badminton competitions set to be held at the National Exhibition Centre.
