The Alpecin-Fenix rider was part of a three-man move, which remained clear on the 204-kilometre stage from Parma to Genoa.

Oldani was joined by the Netherlands' Gijs Leemreize and Italy's Lorenzo Rota, with all three riders seeking their maiden professional wins.

A chase group were unable to regain contact with the breakaway prior to the finish, leaving the three-way tussle for the line.

Leemreize launched the sprint, but the Dutchman was unable to hold off Oldani and Rota.

Oldani, who is riding at the Giro d’Italia for the first time, crossed the line ahead of Rota in a winning time of 4 hours, 26min, 47sec.

"I knew I was fast but it wasn't easy," Oldani said.

"Lorenzo Rota who is my friend is fast as well, so I watched out.

"It's hard to believe that my first pro victory arrives at the Giro d'Italia.

"It's wonderful."

The chase group featuring Dutch riders Bauke Mollema and Wilco Kelderman, Colombia’s Santiago Buitrago and Australia's Lucas Hamilton finished 57 seconds behind the stage winner.

The group ended over eight minutes clear of the peloton, enabling Hamilton and Kelderman to rise significantly in the standings.

Kelderman now lies 13^th overall at 2:51 behind the race leader, with Hamilton 3:45 down in 16^th.

Spain's Juan Pedro Lopez remains in the race lead for a ninth consecutive stage, after negotiating the longest route of the race.

The Trek-Segafredo rider is 12 seconds clear of Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz and Portugal’s Joao Almeida, who complete the top three in the general classification.

France’s Romain Bardet and Australia’s Jai Hindley are 14 and 20 seconds behind the leader.

The race will continue tomorrow with a 150km stage from San Remo to Cuneo.
