Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard warmed up for the defence of his title with an impressive win in the six-stage Tour of the Basque Country.

The Danish cyclist, who rides for Team Jumbo-Visma, won three stages of the International Cycling Union World Tour stage race around the Basque Country region of Spain, including today’s concluding mountainous stage around Eibar.

Vingegaard took charge of the race when he won stage three, a medium mountain stage from Errenteria to Amasa-Villabona.

He only held a five-second lead in the general classification at this point, but increased his advantage to 12 seconds after winning stage four, another medium mountain stage, in Santurtzi.

Vingegaard finished on the same time as the winner in stage five Colombian Sergio Higuita of Bora-Hansgrohe and held a 13 second lead going into today’s final stage.

In today’s stage, which featured seven categorised mountains, Vingegaard increased the pace on the Izua and rode away from the chasing group.

After crossing the line first on the stage in Eibar, Vingegaard became the first Danish rider to win the Tour of the Basque Country, ending with a total race time of 24hrs 45min 24sec.

Spanish rider Mikel Landa of Team Bahrain Victorious finished in second place overall 1min 12sec behind Vingegaard, with the podium completed by fellow Spanish rider Ion Izagirre of Cofidis, who was 1:29 behind the race winner.

As well as winning the general classification, Vingegaard also took the points classification title.

Spanish rider Jon Barrenetxea of UCI ProTeam Caja Rural-Seguros RGA won the mountains classification, with American Brandon McNulty of UAE Team Emirates claiming the young rider classification, and Soudal-Quick-Step victorious in the team classification.
