The United States won their 11th World Lacrosse Men's Championship title by defeating Canada 10-7 in the final.

It was their third title on home soil and the first back-to-back championship win since 2002.

Collegiate player Brennan O’Neill was the standout player for the US, scoring five goals in the final.

The lead swung between one and two for the United Staes until the end when Michael Sowers, who had scored earlier in the game, found the back of the net to make it 10-7 at the Snapdragon Stadium.

Josh Byrne managed three goals and an assist for Canada.

"I feel good," said O’Neill.

"There’s nothing else I’d rather be doing right now than winning the gold medal with my boys.

"There’s no words to describe it and I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else.

"It was a great experience and a great team."

O’Neill’s contributions earned him the Most Valuable Player award.

World Lacrosse chief executive Jim Scherr congratulated the US on the victory and thanked the organising committee for their "tireless work"

"People around the globe consumed this event at record levels, showing us truly how far the sport has come," Scherr said

"Thank you to the city of San Diego, San Diego State University and the University of San Diego for being stellar hosts, and to Joe Tsai and the entire organizing committee for their tireless work on behalf of the sport."

In the third-place match, the Haudenosaunee defeated Australia 11-6 to win their third consecutive bronze medal in the tournament.

While Australia were the better team in the beginning, Haudenosaunee made up for it in the second quarter to race to a 6-3 lead.

Austin Staats finished the tournament with a hat-trick in the last game, taking his overall tall to 30 goals and 38 points, the most in the tournament.

Lyle Thompson also got three goals and an assist as Australia lost the plot.
