Brazil won a nailbiting encounter with Argentina by a single point at the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup in the Domo de la Feria in Leon, Mexico.

Damiris Dantas top scored with 13 for the Brazilians, but in a tense encounter Emanuely De Oliveira scored the two penalty shots late in the final quarter to give Brazil victory 56-55.

It maintained their perfect record after three matches of the competition and they lead Group A.

In the other match in the group, Venezuela beat Cuba 103-85 in overtime after a pulsating encounter that had been all square at 76-76 after the fourth quarter of regulation play.

Venezuela’s Daniela Wallen was the top scorer in the match with a superb 34 points but five Venezuelans scored 13 points or more in the match as they recorded their first victory of the tournament.

Canada remained on course for a quarter-final spot in Group B, after they defeated previously unbeaten Puerto Rico 84-47 to record their second victory of the competition.

The match was a repeat of their 2021 AmeriCup semi final, when Puerto Rico had beaten Canada to reach the final.

Seven different Canadian players scored six points or more but Aaliyah Edwards was their top scorer in the match with 14 points and five assists whilst Kayla Alexander and Yvonne Ejim both scored 12 points.

Colombia recorded their first win with a 70-56 victory over the Dominican Republic.

Jenifer Munoz scored 23 points on the night for the Colombians.

Group play continues tomorrow, with the quarter final ties set for Friday (July 7) and competition set to continue until Sunday (July 9).
