The Trinbago 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games formally concluded with a beach celebration here which was described by Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) chief executive Katie Sadleir as "the most athlete-centred Closing Ceremony I've ever seen".

Competition concluded yesterday in Trinidad and Tobago, but around 1,000 athletes from 71 countries and territories gathered for the Closing Ceremony.

A pre-party was held with music and dancing beforehand, then athletes paraded their way to the main stage.

The Closing Ceremony showcased the culture of the host nation, and featured traditional dance performances including the moko jumbie stilt walkers.

Even a brief torrential downpour did not deter the mood of athletes, who marked the end of the Games with a carnival-style celebration.

Trinidad and Tobago's Minister of Sport and Community Development Shamfa Cudjoe handed the flag bearing the Commonwealth Youth Games and Trinbago 2023 logos to CGF President Dame Louise Martin in one of the ceremonial elements of the closing event.

Dame Louise commended athletes in her address to the Closing Ceremony.

"For me, this has been one of the best Commonwealth Youth Games ever," the Scottish official said.

"To every single one of our Commonwealth athletes, thank you and well done.

"You are all now part of a unique Commonwealth family - and you should be extremely proud of what you have achieved here at Trinbago 2023."

Sadleir said afterwards it was "probably the most athlete-centred Closing Ceremony I've ever seen".

Trinbago 2023 was hailed as a Commonwealth Youth Games of first, including the integration of Para sports into the programme, the staging of the multi-sport event in the Caribbean and the use of the twin island model.

Australia topped the medals table with 26 golds.

A host is yet to be decided for the next edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games, but the CGF wants to return to a two-year cycle for the event.
