The United States' Betsy Alison, Pole Piotr Cichocki, Heiko Kröger of Germany, and the French pair of Ange Margaron and Olivier Ducruix all sealed titles on the final day of Para action at the Sailing World Championships.

The event in The Hague is the first to feature Para events alongside Olympic classes.

Alison, a five-time US Sailing Yachstwoman of the Year, only came back from surgery in November but finished in fine form to take the women's Hansa 303 title.

Going into the last day, Alison held a precarious one-point lead over Olga Gornas-Grudzien of Poland.

With one race left it was a shoot-out between the two which saw Alison prevail in first to end with 15 points in total.

Australia's Alison Weatherly rounded out the top three some way off the pace on 34 points.

"Overall, I was pretty calm going into today because I knew my grasp of things was pretty strong. I’m super happy that I was able to win that last race," Alison said, after needing an operation to remove a cancerous tumour on her hip.

"It's a Cinderella story for me after having surgery in November, just nine months out, not knowing if I would make it here.

"I decided back in March, but I wasn’t sure that physically I would be able to handle the travel and make it here."

Cichocki signed off from the men's Hansa 303 in style with a fifth consecutive win to claim the gold medal.

Takumi Niwa of Japan and Portugal's João Pinto then made up the top three in second and third, respectively.

Sydney 2000 gold medallist Kröger clinched his 10th world title in the men's 2.4m Norlin OD ahead of Italians Davide di Maria and Antonio Squizzato.

"It was a perfect championship, we had great weather and challenging conditions, especially today, it was really hard," Kröger said.

"Maybe people expected this a bit but it’s always great to win a World Championship.

"It's mostly very important for Para sailing and the sport.

"We are here and we are sailing with lots of camera coverage and PR."

Margaron and Ducruix were beaten for just the third time in the last RS Venture Connect race but it did not matter as they had already sealed the title.

The silver then went to Pedro Reis and Guilherme Ribeiro of Portugal while Canada's John McRoberts and Scott Lutes took bronze.

The Olympic disciplines saw Dutch pair Bart Lambriex and Floris van der Werken clinch their third consecutive 49er world title.

Sweden's Vilma Bobeck and Netzler prevailed in the 49erFX before Keiju Okada and Miho Yoshioka of Japan prevailed in the Mixed 470.
