Prince Harry, founder of the Invictus Games in 2014, told gathered ex-servicemen and women at the Closing Ceremony of the sixth edition in Düsseldorf: "Your mission to heal and grow has been a shining example to us all."

Speaking at the Merkur Spiel Arena, Prince Harry thanked Germany for hosting the Games, and looked ahead to the next staging, which will take place in Vancouver-Whistler in 2025.

"After this week know that you are all leading the way for defining human potential and human decency," said Prince Harry, who turned 39 yesterday.

"Germany - thank you.

"You have raised the bar here.

"How much higher can we go in Vancouver?

"I’ll see you there."

Singer-songwriter Rita Ora was the headline performer at the Closing Ceremony.

After seven days of competition, spectators and competitors heard Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier thank the participants - more than 500 injured ex-servicemen and women from 21 countries - for their service and commitment, strength and fighting spirit.

Ora commented: "I am incredibly proud to be part of the Closing Ceremony of the Invictus Games in Düsseldorf.

"I am so excited to perform in front of this unique audience.

"The Invictus Games are a very special sporting event, and the competitors are an inspiration of perseverance and willpower for all of us."

In the only medal event on the final day, Romania beat Great Britain 6-0 in the final of the mixed team open recurve archery.

But Romania had to give best to the hosts in the final of the mixed team compound archery, losing by 278 points to 274.

Ukraine won the mixed team novice recurve title, beating Poland 6-0.

Earlier in the competition, in the hugely popular wheelchair rugby competition, the United States beat Great Britain 21-13 in the mixed team gold medal game, with Australia beating France 20-17 in the bronze medal match.

The sitting volleyball gold went to Poland, who earned a 2-1 win over Colombia - making a first appearance at the Games - in the mixed team event.

The wheelchair basketball title went to the United States, who won the mixed team gold medal match 29-15 over France.

Table tennis, making its first appearance at the Games, saw the Israeli pairing of Y Caesari and M Zorik earn gold in the mixed doubles TT4-7 match thanks to a 2-0 win over their team-mates B Arad and Yigal Lagziel.

Lagziel earned himself another gold the following day by beating fellow Israeli Boaz Tabib 2-0 in the mixed singles TT4 gold medal match.
