Virat Kohli scored an unbeaten 103 as India cruised to a seven-wicket win against Bangladesh at the International Cricket Council Men's Cricket World Cup in Pune.

The 34-year-old hit the 48th one-day international (ODI) century as India moved level on points with New Zealand at the top of the group stage standings with this victory at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

The Black Caps have a superior net run rate which puts them in pole position.

Hosts India were set a target of 257 as Bangladesh were led by openers Liton Das and Tanzid Hasan on 66 and 51, respectively.

India reached their target with 8.3 overs to spare as Kohli moved to within one of Sachin Tendulkar's record of 49 ODI centuries.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill got the chase off to a rapid start with an opening stand of 93 between them before Kohli came to the crease.

"I wanted to make a big contribution," Kohli, named player of the match, said.

"I've had a few 50s in World Cups and haven't converted them so I just wanted to finish the game off this time around and hang around to the end, which is what I've done over the years for the team.

"It's a special feeling playing at home in front of all these people and we just want to make the most of it."

Bangladesh also started promisingly once Das and Hasan got through a challenging first few overs against the new ball as they accelerated on attack.

That was until Hasan was dismissed by the spin of Kuldeep Yadav just one over after reaching his half-century.

The tournament is set to continue tomorrow as Australia take on Pakistan at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.
