One of the biggest sporting events for students in the Baltic States - the 39th edition of the SELL Student Games was held in Kaunas on 16-19 May, hosted by the Lithuanian Students' Sports Association, according to EUSA.

The SELL Student Games is a multi-sport event open to all university and college students worldwide, organised under the patronage of the European University Sports Association (EUSA) and the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The name of the event is derived from the first letter of the participating countries in their respective languages (Soumi for Finland, Eesti for Estonia, Latvija for Latvia and Lietuva for Lithuania). 

Over 1,300 participants from 10 countries, representing 28 nationalities and 38 universities, gathered in Kaunas for the 2024 SELL Student Games. The three-day event showcased an impressive array of sporting talent and camaraderie, with athletes competing in a variety of sports and demonstrating exceptional skill and sportsmanship, while also fostering international friendship and cooperation.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, EUSA President Adam Roczek highlighted the importance of the event in promoting unity and sporting excellence. Aiste Zedelyte-Kaminske, Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Sport, emphasised the role of sport in education and personal development. The President of the Lithuanian Student Sports Association (LSSA), Indre Celkiene, welcomed the participants and expressed her pride in hosting the event.

At this edition, student-athletes had the opportunity to compete in the following sports: basketball, 3x3 basketball, mini-football, volleyball, swimming, powerlifting, orienteering, table tennis, badminton, beach volleyball, sports climbing, judo, athletics, chess and round net. The universities with the highest number of medals were Vytautas Magnus University with 52 medals, Lithuanian Sports University with 46 and Vilnius University with 43.

At the closing ceremony, former Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus (1998-2003 and 2004-2009) presented the trophy to the captains of the 2024 SELL Student Games. This celebrated not only the sporting achievements of the participants, but also a great spirit of unity and cooperation, a testament to the power of sport to bring different cultures together. 

The SELL Games are organised by the National University Sports Federations of the four founding countries and are held under the patronage of EUSA and FISU. During the closing ceremony, the flag was handed over to Mio Kortelainen, President of the Finnish Student Sports Federation, as the host of the next edition of the SELL Games in 2025.
