Sarah-Jane Perry fought back from two games down to beat defending champion Hania El Hammamy and claim the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Black Ball Squash Open title.

Perry staved off two championship balls to beat the fourth seed in 75 minutes in Egyptian capital Cairo.

The final score was 4-11, 9-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-9.

England's Perry - the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games silver medallist - even fought back from an 8-5 deficit in the deciding fifth game.

It was in the fourth game that the Egyptian had two championship balls, but El Hammamy could not convert.

The 20-year-old had defeated Perry en route to winning this event back in March.

This was the last women’s PSA World Tour event of 2020, and Perry's win represents an 11th career PSA title, and first since October 2018.

"Every match this week has been a challenge in a different way," Perry said post-match.

"Hania’s an extremely amazing player, she’s defending champion and she’s been making every match brutal for whoever steps on court with her.

"Today was no different, I had some chances in the second and didn’t take them, but I knew If I kept pushing I might get a chance.

"Until the ball hit the tin in the last rally, I was focusing on what I was trying to do and not thinking about winning.

"I feel really good about the team I’ve got around me and I really feel like I can build on this, push on and test the top ranks of the game where I know I can go."

The men's Black Ball Squash Open begins tomorrow.

Four of the top five players in the world rankings are set to be in action, including world number one Ali Farag.

Egyptian Farag faces Iker Pajares Bernabeu of Spain in round one tomorrow, while second seed Tarek Momen is up against fellow Egyptian Ahmed Wael on Monday (December 14).

A men's Black Ball Squash Open was last played in 2018, when Karim Abdel Gawad beat Farag in the final.

Gawad is the third seed this time around and plays world number 33 Mohamed ElSherbini on Monday in another all-Egyptian first-round match.
