The International Powerboating Union (UIM) has vowed to help "restore aquatic and marine ecosystems around the world" after becoming a founding signatory of the Sports for Nature Framework.

The worldwide governing body is one of a number of organisations to sign up to the framework that was launched at the United Nations (UN) Biodiversity Conference in Montreal.

The framework aims to enable sporting organisations to champion nature and contribute to its protection and restoration.

By signing the Sports for Nature Declaration, the UIM has pledged to adhere to four principles including protecting and avoiding damage to habits and species and restoring and regenerating nature.

The UIM said it was focused on reducing the powerboating sport's environmental impact and encouraging sustainability and environmental awareness.

"Becoming a founding signatory to the Sports for Nature Framework just makes sense for us as an organisation," said UIM President Raffaele Chiulli.

"Powerboating is particularly reliant on the natural outdoor environment to provide the clean air and water we depend on to enjoy our sport to the full, every day.

"As such, we’re committed to taking positive action to help restore aquatic and marine ecosystems around the world."

The Sports for Nature Framework has been designed to complement the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework.

Signatories to the framework are expected to report on their progress annually to an expert panel, who will confirm that actions undertaken are credible and effective.
