Italy's Olympic gold medallists Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti capped off their dominant displays in the Nacra 17 class with overall victory at the Sailing World Championships in The Hague.

The Male and Female World Sailors of the Year 2022, respectively, were not mathematically assured of gold before the start of the medal race.

However, they quickly sped into the lead to dispel any doubts held about where the title was heading.

They powered to victory by more than 300 metres to get the better of Dutch duo Laila van der Meer and Bjarne Bouwer's valiant effort.

"We had good speed this week," said Tita.

"That meant we didn’t have to take too much risk on the starts and it made our job easy.

"The level of the fleet is really high and everyone played really hard in these Championships.

"We have been lucky this week, all week."

Tita and Banti's training partners John Gimson and Anna Burnet of Britain came sixth in the medal race, which is worth double points, to claim the silver while Sweden's Emil Jarudd and Hanna Jonsson bagged bronze.

In the 470 class, Japan's Keiju Okada and Miho Yoshioka also dominated and as a result they had the gold medal secured before the final race.

They eased off to come fifth in the last outing but comfortably topped the standings with 74 points to beat Spaniards Jordi Xammar Hernandez and Nora Brugam Cabot on 106.

Their compatriots Tetsuya Isozaki and Yurie Seki made up the top three with 112 points.

"We have had a really good time at these World Championships this week," said Odaka.

"We have won the 470 Nations Cup and are world champions, so we are very happy.

"I think our boat speed has been very good.

"Downwind today it was a bit shifty and a little bit light but that was good for us."
