Hungary’s Mária Érdi overhauled Switzerland’s Maud Jayet to win the ILCA 6 title in a dramatic conclusion to the Sailing World Championships at The Hague.

Jayet held a four-point lead going into the medal only to see Erdi come back to clinch her first world title.

A penalty on the second leg proved pivot for the Swiss sailor as Erdi seized her opportunity to place third which was enough to seal top spot in the overall standings.

There was just four points separating Erdi and Jayet, who had to settle for silver for the second straight year.

Defending champion Anne-Marie Rindom of Denmark picked up bronze.

"I’m a world champion, which sounds pretty amazing," said Erdi.

"I’m very happy for my family, my friends and for my small support staff that I have back in Hungary.

"I’m just very proud of the work we have been doing with my coach.

"I was hoping and believing that I will get here one day.

"The day has finally arrived and I’m just over the moon."

The ILCA 7 class also finished with Australia’s Matt Wearn clinching an emphatic victory on Dutch waters.

Wearn had a 20-point lead heading into the final medal race and made no mistake as he finished sixth to put the seal on an impressive week for the Australian.

Britain’s Mickey Beckett won the battle for silver as he overcame George Gautrey of New Zealand to take second spot behind Wearn.

"It feels great," said Wearn who has previously received three silver medals.

"It feels like it’s been a long time coming.

"Not that I started to doubt that the performance was there but it’s always a shame to just miss out on the top step so there is a bit of relief.

"I’m ecstatic to have won a World Championship now.

"We have been so close so many times.

"I probably haven’t grabbed every opportunity that I’ve had on the water and other people have been better on the week.

"I can’t say I’ve been unlucky.

"But it feels great to finally get it."
